Chalkboard Kitchen Table

My poor kitchen table. We got it as a wedding present over 6 years ago. In 6 years this loyal piece of furniture has been scratched, hot glued, Sharpied, painted on and had a bottle of nail polish spilled on it. With the exception of the Sharpie marks,  these injuries were caused by Yours Truly.
Here is an example of the before. You can see the sharpie marks, but
the hot glue and scratches are covered by the plates

I have been on a serious chalkboard paint kick the last few weeks and decided it would be awesome to have a giant chalkboard as a kitchen table. My husband didn't like how dark it was, so I added a few light touches with antique white paint and now we have a very happy family.

Materials needed:
Latex chalkboard paint--I used Rustoleum because it didn't require a lot of prep work
Foam paint roller
A tarp to protect your work area
Antique white paint
A paint stamp--I used a fluer de lis
The common sense not to let your 3 year old bounce a ball anywhere near your work area. I make these mistakes so you don't have to!

Clean your table and let it dry. Paint your first coat and let it dry for at least 2 hours before applying the next coat. I did 3 coats.
Personalize your table with a stamp or stencil.

I made this centerpiece from a foam disk that I painted and drilled holes into. I think it really completes the look and it keeps the chalk off the floor.

I'm really happy with how this turned out, and my kids think it is the coolest thing since Legos. :)
Leaving my Hubby a love note :)

The kids officially broke in the table your heart out!

  1. You inspire me Mac! I love it. If I wasn't allergic to chalk I would so have this. Ya think it would work with the white board paint? I saw that the other day and thought that would be cool for Rob's work.

  2. They make dust free and hypoallergenic chalk. I also saw white board contact paper. You could cover your table with that instead of painting.

  3. I just love, love, LOVE this table! We started out with 1 chalkboard door in our home and are now up to 5! I have to refrain from painting everything with that wonderful paint :)

  4. Thank you! There should be support groups for those of us addicted to this stuff. :)

  5. This is fantastic! I love how you added the Fluer de Lis (no idea if that is spelled correctly). How does it clean up? I would just be afraid of getting chalk all over everything!

  6. It cleans up like a dream! The only thing: DO NOT let soggy rice crispies dry on the table. When you pick them off the paint will follow. :P

  7. It is great to have visited your website. Thanks for sharing useful information. And also visit my website about health. God willing it will be useful too
